This article aims to present the principles of universal design on the organization of public spaces and the strengthening of the right to the city. Due to the political importance of universal design, its definition was incorporated into the guidelines of the Brazilian legislation in order to consolidate a project of societies and spaces appropriate for human differences. Universal design has become a legal obligation and, at the same time, for urban development, as well as a democratic principle for expanding the freedom to come and go from different collectives, especially specific groups, such as people with disabilities and reduced mobility.
