In this essay I propose a reflection on the dialogical reasons of the testimony and the traditional concept of history. Starting from the ethics of dialogical communication and the anachronisms of memory, the novel A Costa dos Murmúrios by Lidia Jorge juxtaposes two versions of the past: a fictional representation of the colonial wars and a woman’s testimonial. Through the dialogue with an absent character as well as with the very structure of the narrative, Eva Lopo calls into question the testimonial device of those who in a critical way witness in loco and a posteriori the end of an empire.
