The anthropology of the Mediterranean area has been constructed as a field of enquiry for scholars coming from the North of the world and the “north” of anthropology. Indifference for, and lack of communication with, native scholars and local traditions of folklore and ethnological studies created tensions and misunderstandings, which ultimately led to a redefinition of power relationships between the different anthropological communities. Mediterranean societies have thus become a fertile laboratory for the renewal of the discipline, and Mediterranean anthropology can provide a useful point of reference for global non-hegemonic anthropological projects.
