Abstract

This article discusses the history of the family in Brazil and shows how micro- historical methodology can be an important instrument to analyze elite families such as Ribeiro de Avellar family that was a rich owner of land, slaves and coffee plantations in Vassouras, Paraíba Valley, Rio de Janeiro.
