This article is an analysis of the changes and characteristics of equipment and public spaces of Porto Alegre, capital of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, between the years 1820 and 1890. It uses as sources descriptions of the city contained in the travel diaries of a group of foreign travelers - Auguste Saint-Hilaire, Arsène Isabelle, Robert Ave-Lallemant, Oscar Canstatt, and Breitenbach Wilhelm Moritz Schanz. The use of these reports linked romantically to the authors allow a close approximation to the life of the city and its spaces thereby questioning established assumptions.
