João Vário, considered to be the “inventor” and the “master” of the currently prevailing poetic paradigm in Cape Verde, defined himself in different occasions as a “baroque” poet. The complexity of the metaphoric and obscure language he used to investigate themes such as death, exile, or the tragic condition of his time justifies the identification of João Vário with the Baroque of the 17th century and, in particular, with some neo-baroque aspects of modern poetry. Keywords: João Vário, neo-baroque, aesthetic paradigm, Cape Verde. Downloads
