The reading mother is a typical figure in Western 19th century literature and art. A figure who lives on with her own modulations today. However, there are also women who do not read, do not write or do so in a precarious way. They are assisted in various circumstances by literate "mediators" who intercede for them inside or outside the home. This reality of all times often outlines a subjective, individual, and social drama, related to the experiences of war, uprooting, immigration, and poverty.
